Short-haired breeds, small dogs, seniors, and puppies feel the cold more than you'd think. If your dog shivers, hesitates at the door, or lifts paws on winter walks, it's jacket time.
Does YOUR dog need one?
Generally yes if: they're small (under 20 lbs), short-coated (pit bulls, greyhounds, chihuahuas), very young or senior, or you live somewhere winters bite. Huskies and malamutes? They're fine — they ARE the winter jacket.
Getting the fit right
Measure three things: neck (around the base), chest (widest part behind the front legs), and back length (neck to tail base). The jacket should cover from neck to tail without restricting leg movement. When in doubt between sizes, size up — a slightly roomy jacket beats a tight one. (Our winter jacket runs true to size with an adjustable fit.)
What to look for
Water-resistant outer, warm lining, easy on/off (belly straps beat pull-overs for wriggly dogs), and a leash opening if you use a harness. Reflective trim is a bonus for dark winter evenings — pair it with an LED collar and you're set.
Introduce it gradually
Let your dog sniff the jacket, treat generously, keep the first wear short. Most dogs adjust within a day or two — especially when they realize walks are warmer.
